"CUE TIP SHAPES - SUMMARY ENGINEERING REPORT" © 2009

* Extensive computer modeling by GLADIATORS-usa.com finds "optimum" Cue Tip Shape!

* If you play any Cue Sport, you know that the Cue Tip is the most important part

of any Billiard cue.

* Aside from the Cue Tip & chalk's material properties, selection & maintenance of

the "Best Shape"  or "Profile" is critical to optimal playing performance.

* GLADIATORS-usa.com has recently completed an extensive study of Cue Tip Shapes,

and after computer modeling many, many Cue Tip Shapes -

an "Optimum Cue Tip Shape" has been determined.

* The above graph illustrates the "half profile" or Cue Tip Shape for 5 different

cue tip profiles.  These profiles are identified with numbers (1) thru (5).

* Profile (1) shows a cue tip impact surface with a small radius of curvature,

plus an edge bevel.  The edge is beveled at the Static Friction Angle for the surface

interface of a chalked leather cue tip with a cast phenolic resin cue ball.

* Profile (2) shows a cue tip impact surface with a "USA Dime" radius of curvature.

This cue tip shape is most often used on Snooker cue tips, and on below average

shaft size American Pool cues.

* Profile (3) shows a cue tip impact surface with a "USA Nickel" radius of curvature.

This cue tip shape is used most often on average and above size American Pool cue shafts.

* Profile (4) shows a cue tip impact surface with a "Ball Shape" radius of curvature.

This cue tip shape is the most popular shape used on Russian Billiards

or Pyramid cue tips.  Pyramid is played on 12' tables with large diameter billiard

balls, and the pockets are only a little wider than the balls; thus extreme shot

making accuracy is more important than ability to "Spin" the cue ball.

* Profile (5) shows a cue tip impact surface which combines a large radius of curvature

central area with a small radius of curvature fillet that makes a smooth transition to

an edge bevel.  The edge is beveled at the Static Friction Angle for the surface interface

of a chalked leather cue tip with a cast phenolic resin cue ball.

* Profiles (1) and (5) show the extremes or full range of radius of curvature for cue tips.

These profiles have been mathematically modeled using an Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

The model precisely identified, accurately quantified and analyzed the full range of

possible Cue Tip Shapes.  The spreadsheet allows "what if"  analysis for any variable or

parameter.  For example: "What If" the cue shaft diameter is changed,

or if the tip radius was smaller or larger.

* The above graphic illustrates the full range of Cue Tip Profiles or shapes reviewed in

GLADIATORS-usa.com's "Cue Tip Shape Research Study".  The computer program or

model prepared in this study provides a "SPIN PERFORMANCE vs. STRIKE" output

graphic, which clearly illustrates the "best" or "optimum" Cue Tip Shape !
