"Tamara" - National Georgian Champion Women Russian Billiards player proudly playing with her Amiran Kokhreidze cue. "Tamara" won the classic Russian Billiard cue she is playing with, as a tournament prize; with the right sponsorship, this single woman could "kick ass" playing with the WPBA in the USA. Spring 2007 trip to Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. Club Rio, (click link to listing of Billiard Rooms in Tbilisi) 45 Vazha Pshavela Avenue, Tbilisi, Georgia, Phone: (995 - 32) 42-00-02. That's me, Ray Higley, getting my "ass kicked" by "Tamara" - Champion Russian Billiards player. My wife, Nino, and I visit Tbilisi every spring, and I love playing Russian Billiards with my many friends in Tbilisi.

Overview of Subject Cue.
Subject Cue's butt ring and tip/ferrule detail. Yes, this "new" cue has been played with a few times; how else to see how it "hits".
Russian Billiards cues generally range in weight, W, from 630 grams to 700 grams (22.2 to 24.6 ounces). This cue weighs 657 grams, or 23.1 ounces.
This cue is of the “traditional classic” design with butterfly-spliced points joining the light colored shaft wood with the darker colored, heavier wood at the rear of the cue's shaft and at the front portion of the cue’s butt. These beautiful yet functional “points” provide for a gradual increase in the cue’s weight going from the lightweight/stiff shaft wood to the heavier/denser butt wood. In addition to making a positive contribution to the cue’s weight distribution, these “points” help to maximize the cue’s all-important “hit” by properly directing “hit” stress-waves within the cue to keep the cue’s “hit” clean and accurate.
This cue’s traditional construction technology originated in the latter half of the XIX century, and determines the high-quality playing features of this cue.
There are three types of wood materials used in the construction of this cue. From front to rear: (1) Ash as used for shafts of professional snooker cues, (2) dark African Black Ebony at the butterfly points of the shaft rear and the butt front, and (3) Mahogany at the butt rear handle. The master cue craftsman carefully chose the construction woods of this cue, specifically for hit strength, straightness and density of grain structure, and lack of mineral blemishes. The woods used in the construction of this cue have been age cured for 5 or 6 years, and the cue form has been carefully cut in multiple small staged cuts in order to provide stress-relief and help to ensure the straightness of the final resulting cue. As long as this cue is protected from excessive moisture and heat, it will remain nearly exactly straight and provide the player with many years of high-performance service.
The tip ferrule and joint rings are of polished brass. The joint provides for wood-to-wood contact to preserve continuity of the cue’s all-important “hit”.
The butt-cap is elephant bone, and a full rubber bumper protects the base of the cue’s butt.
The finely polished surface of the cue is finished with natural bee’s wax. This finish is easily refreshed without damage to the underlying wood, does not adversely affect the structure and playing performance of the cue in terms of the all important “hit”, and is pleasant to touch by the fingers.
The cue tip of the subject cue is an American hard leather “Professional” with a non-layered construction.
Unlike American Pool cues which are generally of a standard length of about 58”; Russian Billiard cues are custom sized depending on the height of the player, with the cue tip coming up to a point between the person’s chin and the tip of their nose. This cue is 159 cm in length, or 62.6 inches.
This Russian Billiard cue has a “European” taper (conical or truncated cone shaped); which starts at the cue tip and extends to the bottom of the cue’s butt section. This cue is 12.7 mm in diameter at the cue tip base, 19.1 mm in diameter at the brass joint, and 27.7 mm in diameter at the white bone butt-cap. The taper and materials of this cue determine a cue that is much stiffer than the usual American Pool cue; more suited for play with the much larger and heavier approximately 9 oz Russian Billiard balls and the unbelievably small-tight pockets of a Pyramid Billiards 12' table. This Russian Billiards cue is made for ultimate-accuracy and hard-hitting of the large 9 oz Pyramid Billiard balls.
The balance point, X, of this Russian Billiard cue, X = 115.7 cm (45.6 inches) from the cue’s tip, or 43.3 cm (17.0 inches) from the end of the cue’s butt. The balance point was accurately determined by hanging the cue with a string. This balance point is at 72.7% of the cue’s overall length.
This Russian Billiard cue’s weight distribution or Radius of Gyration, R, was accurately determined by a “double string swing test”. The first string is attached to the cue in the center of the cue’s hold region, which is about halfway between the cue’s balance point and the butt end of the cue. For this test, the “Hold” point, or H = 138 cm. The second string is attached to the cue at a corresponding “Bridge” point, B, or in the case of this cue, B = 35 cm. Points H & B are measured from the cue’s tip, as was the cue’s balance point, X. The location of the second string or distance B is determine by a “swing test”. The cue is swung gently sideways with the string at the H point, while the string location of the B point is tested and changed until point B remains still while point H is being swung sideways. This testing process is a little awkward and somewhat tedious, but is necessary to accurately determine distance B. Technically, point H is referred to as a “center of percussion”, and point B is referred to as a “pivot point”. The numeric values of X, H, and B are entered into the following equation in order to determine the cue’s Radius of Gyration, R = SQUAREROOT [(H – X)(X – B)], or [(138 – 115.7)(115.7 – 35)]1/2= [(22.3)(80.7)]1/2 = [1799.6]1/2 = 42.4 cm, or R = 42.4 cm, Radius of Gyration or weight distribution. The cue’s Radius of Gyration, R, is a measure of its weight distribution, and represents the radius of a ring that would have the same inertial resistance to rotation about the cue’s balance point, X. The cue’s Mass Moment of Inertia, Ix, about the balance point X is, Ix = (W/g)R2, where: W = cue weight, g = acceleration of gravity, and (W/g) = cue Mass. The Mass Moment of Inertia, Ix, is the cue’s inertial resistance to rotation about its balance point, X. A cue’s weight distribution is very important to a cue’s ability to interact well with a player’s natural bridge (B) & and hold (H) point selections.
Cue-Sports’ players naturally hold their cues at a variety of Hold, H, & Bridge, B, points during the cue stroking process. Each player has their own individual characteristics depending upon their human dimensions and playing technique. The Separation distance, S, between the Hold & Bridge will change during the stroke according to the “Player Characteristic Equation”: S = H – B, where: S changes with the Bridge distance, B, and the Hold point, H.
Each Cue-Sports’ Cue has its own individual character that depends upon the cue’s balance, X, and weight distribution or Radius of Gyration, R. The “Cue Characteristic Equation”: S = {R2/(X – B)} +(X – B) is determined by Physics, and specifically by the cue's Dynamic properties.
When the “Player Characteristic Equation” and the “Cue Characteristic Equation” are both presented together on graphs of S verses B, “Player-Cue Matching” or cue sizing to the player can be more accurately determined.
